Ali Haffner

ERISA Attorney


Ali Haffner is an ERISA attorney who has counseled and educated employer plan sponsors, fiduciaries, and service providers on all aspects of retirement, health, and welfare benefits and executive compensation for nearly 30 years—in private practice, as in-house at several Fortune 100 multinational corporations, and as a coordinator and presenter of webinars, seminars, and conferences. She received her J.D. from Cornell Law School (1995) and her B.A., magna cum laude, from Alfred University (1992). During law school, Ms. Haffner served as an articles editor on the Cornell Journal of Law and Public Policy, a member of the Moot Court Board and the Conkling Inn chapter of Phi Delta Phi, and a coach in the New York State Bar Association High School Mock Trial Program. 

Ms. Haffner is a former editor and contributing author of the Thomson Reuters Tax & Accounting EBIA HIPAA Portability, Privacy & Security manual and EBIA Self-Insured Health Plans manual. She authored a paper entitled “ERISA Preemption: Foundation of Success and Linchpin of Future Innovation,” which was selected for publication and presentation at the ERISA 50th Symposium in September 2024. She is currently Senior Associate General Counsel at Elevance Health, where she advises the company on employee benefits and executive compensation matters. 

Ms. Haffner teaches the Employee Benefits and the Employee Retirement Income security Act (ERISA) course.
